Happiness is a choice.

Here are a few things that you can use to create happiness:

1. Change your “have-to’s” to “get-to’s”

We often say “I have to go to the gym today”, “I have to drive my kids to school”, “I have to make dinner for my family”. These things are not have-to’s, these are get-to’s. You are fortunate enough to go to the gym, take time for yourself, and build a better you. You get the pleasure of spending time with your children while driving them to school. Remember tomorrow is not a guarantee. You get to put food on the table and create an opportunity for your family to get together and learn from one another.

Start appreciating the person you are and the things in your life today while striving for a better tomorrow.

2. No complaining

Complaining is like a virus, it spreads (like wildfire). Nothing keeps your mind in a negative space like complaining. Once the complaining starts (in your head or aloud) your brain will seek out anything else negative. Make a goal to not complain every day for thirty days, you will be surprised how much better you feel. What do you have to lose??

Another way you can prime your mind for the positive is with #3, journalling.

3. Journalling in The Five Minute Journal

“The Five Minute Journal is your secret weapon to focus on the good in your life, become more mindful, and live with intention.” With a simple structured format based on positive psychology research, you will start and end each day with gratitude. Completing the journal first thing in the morning when you wake up allows you to prime your mind for positivity all day.

Its quick and simple. Each morning you write:
3 things you are grateful for
3 things that would make the day great (within your control)
Daily affirmation

At night:
3 amazing things that happened that day
How you could have made today better

Imagine how it would feel starting every day in a positive mood, energized, and ready to crush it! Instead of mentally replaying all your life’s problems and pulling the covers over your head, you chose to focus on the good. That which we focus on expands.

Day by day you appreciate life more and find yourself feeling happier. Stop rolling your eyes. It is not that crazy of a concept.

4. Meditation with Headspace App

Think of it like a gym membership for the mind. They show you techniques to train your mind for a healthier, happier, more enjoyable life. The have a free 10-day trial to help you try before you buy. Check them out!

Of course, do not try to incorporate all these things at once. Set yourself up for success by creating the habit with one of the above, the one that appeals to you the most. Challenge yourself to do it every day for 30 days. Once you complete the habit with that then you can try to add something else in. Remember, it is not about doing everything all in one go, it’s abut consistency and creating the habit.
